Lyndsie Bourgon grew up in Milk River, Alberta, a town of about 800 people. She studied Journalism in Halifax, at the University of King’s College, and graduated in 2008. Since then she has travelled around the world, including Scotland, Italy, Cuba and more, before moving back to Canada and freelancing. Her features have been published in the Guardian, The Walrus, Maclean’s, the Globe and Mail and more. I caught up with her in Calgary to ask about her feature about wild horses and the cull in The Wildies of Alberta, which appeared in Roads & Kingdoms in June 2014. It follows the story of the only two ranchers in the province with the permits to catch wild horses.

From working in a large Toronto cemetery to rowing across the Atlantic Ocean in 2011, Charles Wilkins’ thirst for a journey surely will bring out the inner adventurist in any reader of his work. Now in his mid-60s, many of his expeditions are channeled into the 15 books he’s written throughout his long and successful career.

Wilkins is a regular contributor to Outdoor Canada, and recently, he wrote, “The Last Hunt,” for the magazine’s winter 2015 edition. The article recounts the final days and lives of eight hunters before their plane crashed into Lake Erie, Ontario on Jan. 17, 2004. Wilkins shares what it was like to cover the tragic incident. As well, he talks about his life as an adventure writer and magazine journalist.

Darrell Baumgartner’s duties as a National Hockey League scout takes him all over the world including the 2013 NHL Scouting Combine held in Toronto. Photo by Colton Hordichuk.

Sitting in section 221, row eight, seat 17 during most Regina Pats games at the Brandt Centre is Darrell Baumgartner.

When play is on, his black winter coat remains buttoned up. His notebook rests on his lap, and occasionally, his cell phone will go off, showcasing a red background with a familiar hockey logo. While many consider the nosebleed section the least desired seat in the house, it’s the perfect vantage point for the Washington Capitals scout.
