Rams ready 12 rookies

Noah Pictonby Arielle Zerr

After a strong showing in the 2012 season that ended with an appearance in the Hardy Cup, the University of Regina Rams are actively recruiting Canada’s best high school football stars. With 20 Regina Rams, 14 of whom are starters, moving on from the program, including star Quarterback Marc Mueller, the Rams have some big shoes to fill.

Twelve new players had signed letters of intent with the Rams as of Jan. 16, agreeing to cease any current or future talks with other Canadian Interuniversity Sport football teams. Rams head coach Frank McCrystal is optimistic about his new players.

Kelly Wiebe 'blew away the field' to become first U of R cross-country national champion

Kelly WiebeBy Jonathan Hamelin

When Kelly Wiebe crossed the finish line first on Nov. 10, it meant a number of firsts.

It was Wiebe's first national championship victory at the university level. It was the first time a University of Regina cross-country athlete earned that honour. Wiebe's time of 30 minutes 21 seconds was good for first all-time in the course record books.

Meagan Cormier stepped up for the free kick from 22 yards out, buried the ball in the corner of the net – and entered the record books.

The goal – which came in extra time of the University of Regina women’s soccer team’s Sept. 16 contest against the visiting Winnipeg Wesmen – was Cormier’s fourth of the game, helping her Cougars defeat Winnipeg 5-0.

Tough loss for U of R Rams

If you were to tell Frankie Gray a year ago that he would be the starting quarterback for the University of Regina Rams Football team this fall, he probably would’ve laughed in your face.

However, with first string quarterback Marc Mueller out with a shoulder injury and second string quarterback Dylan Hart out as well, this is the position the third string rookie found himself in Sept. 14 as his Rams took the field against the University of Calgary Dinos.

Hosting nationals was a home run for the Cougars

A sixth-place finish at nationals may not have given fans reason to root, root, root for the home team, but the University of Regina women’s softball team is looking beyond the result.

From Oct. 5 to 8, the Cougars played host to the Canadian Collegiate Softball Association national championships at Kaplan Field and Rambler Park. It was the first time they’ve ever hosted the event.

The number one ranked University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team is taking little pride in its record-breaking start to the season.

Led by a dominant fourth quarter by guard Michelle Clark, the Cougars defeated the University of Fraser Valley Cascades 78-61 on January 20th for a team record of 12 straight wins to start the season. Clark finished the game with 22 points, most coming in the fourth quarter.

The win broke the previous team record of 11 wins to start a season, which the Cougars accomplished in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004.

CFL commissioner talks to U of R students about recipe for success in CIS

By Jonathan Hamelin

Fluffy eggs, sizzling strips of bacon and crispy hash browns were on the menu at the second-annual University of Regina president’s breakfast for athletics on Sept. 13. However, listening to a live conversation with CFL commissioner Mark Cohon was the dessert.
